BRAC is a non-governmental development organization dedicated to alleviating poverty by empowering the poor to bring about change in their own lives. Started in Bangladesh in 1972, it focuses on work with poor women, who are the worst affected by poverty.

If empowered with the right tools, they can play a crucial role in bringing about changes within their families and their communities. Over 98% of its membership is female; and more than 95% of its volunteer cadre - health volunteers, paralegal trainers, agriculture, livestock and poultry extension workers & school teachers and 100% of 911 Community Organizers are women.

Recognizing that there are many underlying and interlinked causes of poverty, it has developed support services in areas of human rights, legal aid, education, health care, social and economic empowermentfinance and enterprise development, agriculture, environmental sustainability and disaster preparedness.
